I hate the hype around software
Hey everyone,
so you might be wondering what this blog post is about. Well, it’s simple. I hate hype around computer software, and by software I mean any software.
For example, Hyprland, Ghostty, etc. Hyprland is a good wayland compositor and alll, but the thing is that it is mostly focus on looks, it doesn’t care about performance, so you will often get very poor performance of your hardware when using that compositor, like your fans constantly spinning, or hardware heating up, etc. Similarly Ghostty is a great terminal and all, but the thing is, it has a lot of memory leaks, and the worst part is, any command you run in Ghostty will take a lot longer to even complete itself.
People aren’t saying these things about these programs because they are blindly following the hype around them, like how if you search “wayland compositors”, you will get results around Hyprland. And similary if you search “terminal for macos and linux”, then 90% of the time you will get Ghostty. Honestly, Ghostty is a pretty mid terminal, and the fact that it has these issues makes it even worse. The reason their is hype around Ghostty is because of who developed it, which is Michell Hashimoto. Honestly, I always found it cringe to hype a software just because some “big” guy made it, like come on. Besides why so much hype around it anyways?
These two software clearly covers what I am saying: Don’t blindly use a software just because it has all the hype in the world. Their are things which matters than some stupid hype around it, like for once “performance”. You know what’s funny? Ghostty advertises itself as “performant terminal” while it is far from it.
I gave both Ghostty and Hyprland a fair short by daily driving those two for a month on my personal computer. And this is the conclusion I came with, this is not me just blindly hating on them.
Sure, if you care about the looks more than performance and things, go for it. I am not stopping you from using them. But if you want performance, then there are other options, like niri, mangowc, wezterm, foot, etc.
Anyways, that’s all I wanted to say. I just wanted to throw out my frustrations with these software out there, so I wrote this blog post.
